What is Namecoin?
The Namecoin project is based on Bitcoin's blockchain tech and utilizes the same PoW consensus protocol, meaning the two can be merge-mined. The technology that the Namecoin team develops puts in focus decentralization, privacy, security, speed and resistance to censorship of the existing Internet structures. Current domain names such as .com or .net are controlled by central authorities and are prone to blockades, censorship and privacy breaches. With Namecoins' .bit domain, this is not possible because the "internet's phonebook" i.e. DNS (Domain Name Server) is on client computers instead of on some centralized server. Namecoin network also allows for registration of human-readable names - NameID, with all benefits of the decentralized backend and its security options. However, the NameID tech is currently labeled by the team as experimental. The smallest unit of Namecoin is called Swartz.
